The gradual onset of health problems in an apparently healthy pet often goes unnoticed. Once symptoms appear, the condition may be more difficult or costly to diagnose and treat. Although age itself is not a disease, it can bring many conditions that, if diagnosed early, can be reversed or controlled for extended periods of time.

At least once and perhaps twice a year, your pet needs a complete physical examination. Remember: a pet's lifespan is shorter than a person's. A lot can happen in 12 months.

Immunizations

Due to the many recent discoveries and innovations in veterinary medicine, your pet can be protected from most major diseases. Today, many immunizations and preventive treatments are available that did not exist as of just a few years ago.

Vaccination protocols are no longer developed with a "one size fits all" approach and are instead developed for each patient based on factors such as age, lifestyle and location, along with risk factors such as species and breed.

Geriatric Care

Like people, pets are living longer! This is wonderful news, but it is accompanied by an increased prevalence of age-related issues that effect health and quality of life. The aging process varies between species and specific breeds as well as among individuals. For example, large-breed dogs reach "old age" at eight or nine years, whereas cats may comfortably live into their late teens! As an arbitrary guide, owners should start to consider age-related issues at six to eight years in dogs and 10 years in cats.

New developments in veterinary medicine include geriatric diets, chemotherapy and drugs for the treatment of senile behavior, arthritis, and cardiac disease. These advancements, along with nutritional and multivitamin supplements, have enabled us to offer concrete solutions for many of these problems

Microchipping

Every year, millions of pets go missing and many never return home again. Implanting a microchip in your pet is an excellent way to help increase the chances of finding your pet should he or she become lost. A microchip is a tiny electronic device, about the size and shape of a grain of rice. It is implanted beneath a pet’s skin between the shoulder blades, and stays there for the pet's entire life. This procedure is as easy and as painless as a vaccination.

Each microchip has a unique number. This number, along with information about the owner and pet, are added to a national pet registry. Most veterinarians and animal shelters have electronic scanners for detecting and reading these implanted microchips. If a lost pet is found, and the microchip is scanned, the registry is called and the owner is contacted.

We use the AVID microchip system.
